The Covid-19 pandemic caused a sudden spike on top of already increasing home prices in Sammamish. Although the recent spike has been driven by more people working from home and looking for more space, several structural factors have built up to make housing more unaffordable in Sammamish and across the greater Seattle area over the last two decades.

This includes how cities like Sammamish have made decisions on moratoriums, permitting, zoning and land use that intentionally reduce the supply of housing, while demand has boomed from the strong local economy that has drawn many people to move to Seattle and the Eastside.

The resulting affordability crisis for housing has created many negative consequences in our region, including gentrification, displacement, and homelessness.

The Indy on Air podcast team invited three guests to discuss current housing trends, the forces driving these trends, and how they have resulted in greater inequity in our community today.
