Eastlake girls basketball crushes Newport to stay undefeated
At Eastlake’s ninth game of the season, the Lady Wolves maintained their undefeated record with a 68-25 victory over the Newport Knights at home Saturday evening.
Eastlake quickly took the lead when outstanding offense from Kaylia Jackson and McKayla Matsuoka put 12 unanswered points on the board for the Lady Wolves. A three-pointer from Ava Schmidt stirred up the crowd when a seemingly impossible pass through two defenders provided a clear opportunity for her from three-point land. Combined with multiple steals from Sofia Alaus, Eastlake owned the court for the entire first quarter.
Defensive game for Eastlake ramped up in the second quarter, especially with standout performances by Tatum Wood, Alaus and Jackson. Alaus and Wood combined for 14 steals and three blocked shots on defense, stretching the Lady Wolves’ lead to 45-13 at the half.
Alaus was on fire the entire game, opening the second half with a three-pointer to get the Lady Wolves started. She also added four steals and a blocked shot to run out the clock on the third quarter, giving Eastlake a lopsided 53-14 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Natalia Sefair-Lopez added to her stats with an assist for a layup on a fast-break, keeping the team’s energy flowing. Adding insult to injury, Grace Thompson scored another three-pointer, her fourth of the night. Despite great effort, strong defense, and better offense from Newport in the fourth quarter, Eastlake’s intensity proved too much for the Knights. In the end, the Lady Wolves won by a stunning 43 points.
