Eastlake baseball clenches 6-2 win over Skyline
In a rousing back-and-forth, hot-bat rally on Monday, April 24, the Eastlake Wolves beat the Skyline Spartans with a 6-2 victory.
The Spartans started strong in their first at bat with a single from Jaxon Menold. Dylan Folkman followed with another hit that advanced Menold into scoring position on third. Mason Pirello added a single and the first RBI of the game, giving the Spartans the early 1-0 lead.
Following a quiet second and third inning for both teams, the Wolves came alive in the top of the fourth. Jack Edmunds jump-started the team with a double, at which point courtesy runner Noah Koong swapped in. Blake Borup followed with another hit and an RBI that advanced Koong home. A single from Luke Schlecht allowed Borup to cross the plate, putting the Wolves in the lead, 2-1.
Not to be outdone, the Spartans answered with hits of their own in the bottom of the fourth. With Pirello on first, Aiden Gerth followed with a double, bringing Pirello home to close the inning in a tie at 2-2.
Pressured to keep pace with the Spartans, Bryce Johnson promptly launched a single, followed by an Edmunds double and the RBI that sent Johnson across home plate. Unable to score in the fifth inning, the Spartans surrendered the lead to the Wolves 3-2.
With time running out, Levi Joyce connected for the Wolves with a game-clenching triple and an additional two RBIs that brought home Schlecht and Tyler Griffin. Grady Woodward added the final hit and RBI to bring in Joyce, giving the Wolves the comfortable lead to claim the 6-2 victory against the Spartans.
The Wolves ended the season with a final standing of 19-2 to take first in the KingCo league; the Spartans ended 11-9. The district tournament takes place May 4-13. Skyline plays May 4 at home against Bothell; Eastlake plays May 6 against an opponent to be determined by prior game results.
