Eastlake Wolves celebrate senior night with 14-7 victory against Bothell Cougars
In a back-and-forth, suspense-filled overtime battle, the Eastlake Wolves claimed a 14-7 single-touchdown victory against the Bothell Cougars for the Eastlake senior night game.
Despite best efforts on both sides of the ball, the first quarter ended with no score for either team in a tight, equal-talent match-up. But the stalemate broke the following quarter when the Cougars took possession on the Wolves 36-yard line. Inching their way toward the goal, Cougar Wyatt Mickelberry finally broke through the Wolves’ defense with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to give the Cougars the 7-0 lead.
With pressure mounting and less than a minute remaining in the second quarter, the Wolves managed to answer. Senior Robert RJ Abedi put the Wolves on the board with a 3-yard rushing touchdown to end the first half with a 7-7 tie.
The second half continued with frustrations and mistakes. The Wolves threw interceptions in both the third and fourth quarter. They also managed to recover a Cougar fumble in the third quarter but despite getting close, neither team could capitalize on the mistakes and break through to the goal line. Both the third and fourth quarters ended with no change to the score, a 7-7 tie, forcing the game into overtime.
Now in post-regulation play, the atmosphere was tense, filled with excitement and anticipation. The Cougars won the coin toss and chose to start on defense. As time ticked down and the stalemate continued, it looked as though a second overtime was inevitable.
But with one minute remaining, Wolves wide receiver Kade Haroldsen pulled in a precise 25-yard touchdown pass from Benjamin Weintraub that brought cheering fans to their feet. While the Cougars continued to work to keep themselves in the game, the Wolves concluded play with a much-needed, well-timed sack from linebacker Jacob Arens that prevented another tie and more overtime play.
As the final whistle blew, the exhausted Eastlake Wolves claimed a hard-fought 14-7 victory over the Bothell Cougars to celebrate their senior night.
In their final regular season game, the Eastlake Wolves will face the North Creek Jaguars on Saturday, Oct. 28 at North Creek at 7 p.m.
