Lady Wolves score double digit win over Mercer Island
On Friday, Jan. 10, the Lady Wolves faced the Mercer Island Islanders and won 66-45 to bring their record to 6-8.
Eastlake gained the lead straight away, ending the quarter with 12 points on the board, including back-to-back 3-pointers from Brooke McCartney and Megan Roberts. For Mercer Island, the struggle to convert possession into points was evident as the quarter closed with a significant margin, 12-2, for the Lady Wolves.
While the Islanders continued to struggle, the second quarter was better for both teams. Izzy Russell seemed to find a groove, adding a 3-pointer to the board for Mercer Island. Unfortunately for the visitors, the home team continued to mount pressure including a 3-point bucket from Maggie Bredeweg. By halftime, the Lady Wolves added 19 points to the board, outshining Mercer Island’s 12, for a 31-14 advantage.
Finding their rhythm in the third quarter, the Islanders had their most successful period yet with a 16-point addition compared to Eastlake’s 13. This, in part, was due to Eastlake frustration and resorting to more aggressive play that sent the Islanders to the foul line multiple times. The final result was a 44-30 end to the quarter but still an Eastlake advantage.
With the Islanders change in strategy, the Lady Wolves needed to make some adjustments for the fourth quarter if they were going to maintain their lead. Eastlake traveled to 3-point land with contributions from McCartney and Bredeweg. Mercer Island responded with a 3 from Dillyn Prescott but, in the end, the divide was more than the Islanders could overcome. Despite a final period 15-point contribution–their highest-scoring of the game– Mercer Island lost to Eastlake, 66-45.
The Lady Wolves will play the Redmond Mustangs at Eastlake High School on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:00 p.m.
