Eastlake edges Mead 21–14 to advance in WIAA Playoffs
On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Eastlake Wolves defeated the Mead Panthers, 21-14, in a highly anticipated WIAA football playoff matchup that kept fans on their feet from start to finish.
Eastlake came out ready to fight as the quarter began. Senior wide receiver, Landon Johnson, caught an early touchdown pass from Ryder Barrysmith to put the home team on the board for an early Eastlake 7–0 lead.
Momentum stayed with the Wolves as Rory Johnson hauled in another touchdown pass from Barrysmith in the first half. With another successful kick, the Wolves extended their advantage to 14–0 heading into the halftime break.
Taking advantage of the intermission, the Panthers returned to the field with renewed energy and struck quickly. Quarterback Evan Drew connected with Cooper Smith on a perfectly placed pass into the end zone to narrow the deficit, 14–7.
Eastlake answered back, as Myles Johnson powered through the defense for a rushing touchdown, restoring their two-score cushion, 21–7, to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Mead mounted one last push. With just two minutes left on the clock, Max Faagau punched in another touchdown for the Panthers to make it 21–14. Despite the valiant effort, time was not on their side, and the visitors were unable to complete the comeback, settling for a 21-14 loss.
While Mead’s season closed with a spirited performance that showed heart until the last whistle, Eastlake came out on top to advance to the next playoff round.
The Eastlake Wolves will play the Puyallup Vikings in Puyallup for game eight. The date and time will be announced.
