PODCAST: How High Schoolers are Managing at Home
As social distancing measures press on through the summer months, it is more imperative than ever that we find new and creative ways to pass the time. If you’re looking for suggestions on how to end your mind-boggling boredom, then look no further. Here is Indy on Air’s comprehensive (but not exhaustive) list of Things to Do When Quarantined:
- Educate yourself! While we may be on a break from school, there are plenty of ways to stay engaged in learning from Coursera classes to taking a personal re-education journey on how to be anti-racist and support marginalized communities (Netflix’s BLM collection is a popular choice). You can also check out our articles on Pride and BLM and how you can use your time to help.
- Speaking of Netflix, binge-watching is another popular and somewhat constructive activity. Through Youtube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Disney+, or any one of the other million streaming platforms, there is access to hours and hours of content to help make the monotony a little more bearable.
- Express your creative side! You finally have enough time to follow a Bob Ross painting tutorial, so why not take the time to do so? Not only will it take up a copious amount of time, but by the end you’ll have a beautiful piece of art to remind you of what Outside looks like.
- Pick up baking or cooking as a life skill! Sourdough bread appears to be a popular option, but with thousands of recipes available online and enough time to scroll through the pages-long sagas that come before them on every independent home chef’s’s website, there is no excuse to not learn how to be a pretty decent cook.
- Start an independent podcast that covers local news and events in your city as a part of a larger independent news project in the form of an online community newspaper. (If you are a high school student and interested in joining our team in the fall, reach out to us!)
- Work on home renovations! Repaint your walls, re-tile your roof, re-decorate your living room. HGTV may be playing re-runs but that doesn’t mean you can’t channel your inner Chip and Joanna Gaines and see what you can do to make your home Pinterest-worthy.
- Contemplate your place in the universe and the purpose of life.
- Take up gardening! The occasional rain and abundant sunshine in the summer months are ideal for your blossoms. Take the opportunity to plant some new trees or flowers and really spruce up your front lawn or backyard. You can even get houseplants and learn how to take care of them now that being too busy is no longer a viable excuse for accidentally killing them.
- Use the extra time to work out! With gyms being closed, it can be hard to work out, but there are plenty of creative ways to get exercise at home. You can take the road of some creative Sammamish residents, or you can just stream simple yoga or work out videos. You can even play soccer tennis if you’re feeling particularly experimental. Either way, it’s important to remember to stay healthy and active, especially in the current circumstances.
- Remember that even if it feels like time is dragging on and this quarantine will never end, we are all in this together! There are plenty of ways to stay involved with friends and community members, whether it’s through zoom call parties or staying engaged with local news in the form of a bi-weekly podcast. Reach out to your buds and keep up to date with the latest news as it breaks here on the Sammamish Independent, and maybe it’ll all feel a little bit less lonely.
