Basketball roundup: Eastside Catholic blows out Cleveland 88-46

Boys (1-0):
Eastside Catholic 88, Cleveland 46 (April 28)
After a slow start and being down by 7 at the start of the game, the seniors on the Eastside Catholic team led the way and pushed the Crusaders to a double-digit lead over Cleveland. The closest the game got was 25 points at the half. James Laurence led the team in scoring with 21 points, freshman Jacob Cofie contributed 17 points including three dunks, and sophomore Bennett Olujic added 16 points.
Eastlake High School
Boys (5-0):
Eastlake 61, Juanita 58 (April 27)
At the start, both teams showed a lot of energy defensively, with the score at 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. Eastlake was forced into 11 turnovers in the first half and the game stayed close at 26-23, Eastlake, at the half. Going into the third quarter, Eastlake came out strong and extended their lead to 7 points early, which ended up being their largest lead of the game. It was an intense, back and forth game, with both teams exchanging blows. Junior Cooper Brown took on the challenge of guarding Ravens star Jordan Tate, holding him to a season low of 11 points on the game. The Wolves had four players in double figures. Brown added 10 points and 5 rebounds, senior Jackson Edward had 11 points and 7 rebounds, Owen Kinzer contributed 11 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds, and Will Woodward finished with a game high 25 points and 20 rebounds. Eastlake’s defense was key for this game. Despite suffering 18 turnovers, the tight defense allowed them to slip by with a 3-point victory. The two teams will face each other again on Friday.
Girls (4-1):
Eastlake 64, Juanita 31 (April 27)
In Kirkland against Juanita, the Lady Wolves came out looking to run and caused plenty of challenges for the Ravens in the backcourt, starting out hot at 26-7 after the first quarter. The team never looked back. Sophomore Ava Schmidt, for the second game in a row, led all scorers with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Senior Emily Holsan contributed 17 points, including 3 of 6 shooting from behind the arc. She also had 7 rebounds and 3 assists on the night. Junior Hallie Sehlin added 6 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Genevieve “GG” Hastings capped off the defensive effort by taking the first charge of the season for the Lady Wolves.
