Skyline softball tied for second in KingCo after regular season
The Skyline Spartans varsity girls softball team finished its regular season play on April 27 with a 15-5 winning record, tying them for second place with the Redmond Mustangs in KingCo 4A. The Bothell Cougars took the district title this year with an 18-2 overall season record.
The Spartans opened the season on a high note with a 4-2 win against the Mustangs. Unfortunately, the opener did not extend into a win streak and Skyline went on to lose two games in the next four weeks against Mount Si (8-2), and Bonney Lake, (3-2).
However, this slump was shortlived. The Spartans pressed forward, winning an impressive five games in a row during late March to early April. They beat Newport (13-2), Inglemoor (5-3), North Creek (7-0), Woodinville (6-5), as well as their rival Issaquah (3-2), for a midseason record of 8-2. The Bothell Cougars ended the Skyline win streak on April 6, a game that resulted in a 6-1 Spartan loss.
Next, the Spartans faced Redmond for their second matchup of the regular season, and lost 5-3 — a surprising result after beating the Mustangs in the season opener.
They were down but not out. Skyline rallied and won four shutout games against Eastlake (1-0), Newport (8-0), North Creek (2-0), and Woodinville (3-0) between April 11 and 22.
On April 27, Bothell broke their streak once again during their second regular season matchup with a close final score of 7-6.
The Spartans finished the regular season as they began, with a triumph at home. This time they defeated Inglemoor (6-3) and moved on to the 4A KingCo playoffs with the second-best record in the league.
While the Spartans had a winning record for away games at 6-4, they did even better at home with an amazing regular season home record of 10-1.
After qualifying for the postseason, Skyline defeated Inglemoor, 6-3, in their first playoff game on May 4, but lost to Redmond 3-2 for their second district game on May 10. That loss forced a second game on the same day against Eastlake, which ended in a 14-4 win for the Spartans. This meant Skyline would go to the losing bracket final for third place. Their May 11 game against the Mount Si Wildcats ended in a loss, placing the Spartans in fourth place for the 4A KingCo playoffs.
