Skyline falls to Bothell in overtime
The Skyline Spartans lost in overtime, 17-14, to the Bothell Cougars on Friday, Sept. 27, in a nailbiter that had the crowd on the edge of their seats the entire game.
As both teams struggled to find a rhythm, the Spartan defense capitalized on a Cougar mistake with a surprising interception by Luke Morgan for a pick-six to put Skyline on the board first, 7-0.
The second quarter saw Bothell begin to chip away at Skyline’s lead. Bothell running back Wyatt Mickelberry bulldozed his way through the Skyline defense for a 1-yard rushing touchdown, tying the score 7-7.
As halftime approached, the game took a sharp turn on another Spartan misstep. The Spartans fumbled deep in their own territory, allowing Cougar Cole Brooke to scoop up the ball for a 92-yard go-ahead touchdown, 14-7, to close the first half.
The third quarter turned into a battle of defenses, with both teams struggling to move the ball effectively. Skyline tried to respond but was repeatedly thwarted by the Bothell defense. Cougar Diego Palomera Curiel delivered a huge sack to halt one of Skyline’s drives, as both teams remained locked in a defensive struggle. Neither offense could break through, and the score remained 14-7, Bothell, heading into the final quarter.
Despite trailing by one touchdown, the Spartans knew that if they were disciplined and strategic, they could still claim victory. With perseverance, Skyline finally found a way to crack the Bothell defense when a well-executed run up the middle led to a 35-yard rushing touchdown by Mason Pirello, leveling the score, 14-14.
With a tie on the board, both teams were unwilling to give up, and the stalemate continued. As time ticked away, Bothell had a chance to win in regulation but missed a crucial field goal late in the game. The evenly matched contest was sent into overtime.
With a chance to clench victory, Skyline had the first possession but failed to profit on the opening kickoff, leaving the door open for the Cougars. Enthusiasm renewed with another opportunity, Bothell marched down field with Mickelberry leading the charge to the Skyline 2-yard line. Unable to punch through the Spartan defense on downs, the Cougars sent in kicker Curiel, who easily nailed the 19-yard field goal to sew-up the win, 17-14, for Bothell.
The Skyline Spartans will meet the Eastlake Wolves, at Eastlake, for the battle on the plateau on Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
