Skyline crushes Cedarcrest in thrilling basketball win
After losing their first four games, the Skyline Spartans boys basketball team really needed a win to boost their spirits. They finally got one Saturday, dominating the Cedarcrest Red Wolves at a home with a 55-37 victory.
As both teams took to the court, the Red Wolves took control with consecutive 2-point buckets for an early 4-0 lead. Refusing to be left behind, the Spartans immediately responded with a pair of their own for a 4-4 tie, setting the tone for what appeared to be an aggressive matchup including several fouls for the home team. Despite numerous free throw opportunities for Cedarcrest, Skyline captured the 17-10 lead to close the first quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the Spartans as Graham Hohman sparked the momentum for Skyline with a quick, flashy dunk that had the crowd roaring. The Spartans dominated the second quarter by adding 15 points, outscoring the visitors 2 to 1. Adding insult to injury with a buzzer-beating 3-point bucket to end the half, Skyline went into the break with a comfortable 32-17 lead.
As tensions mounted and frustrations set in, both teams began the second half with a pair of fouls before any points were added to the board. In an attempt to organize play, each coach called a much needed timeout. Finally breaking the drought, the Red Wolves scored with a pair of 2-pointers. Hohman responded for the Spartans with his second dramatic dunk. Adding to the board, Leo Houpis contributed two 2-pointers for Skyline. As each team answered bucket-for-bucket, Skyline maintained their 40-26 advantage.
Despite having their highest scoring quarter of the night, the Red Wolves could not overcome the deficit. Including several contributions from Harper McGillis for the Spartans, the home team once again added 15 points to the board for a 55-37 decisive victory for Skyline.
The Skyline Spartans will play the Bothell Cougars on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Bothell High School at 7:15 p.m.
