Announcing Brooke Lin as our next editor-in-chief
In continuing our goal of developing future journalists as a student-run organization, we are pleased to announce Brooke Lin as our next editor-in-chief.
Ms. Lin is currently a junior at Eastlake High School and has been a journalist on our staff since the spring of 2022. She is the most prolific reporter we have ever had, holding the Sammamish Independent record for the most number of stories published: 32.
She started as a business reporter, covering a wide range of businesses including Crumbl Cookies and YogaSix, as well as trends including the increase in vacation travel post-pandemic and a property tax spike that hit local residents.
Simultaneously, she wrote stories for both the city hall and community sections, with wide-ranging stories such as a local effort to supply suitcases for Ukrainian refugees, as well as the passage of the City of Sammamish’s climate action goals.
Ms. Lin was a key member of the team that covered city council elections in 2023, during which she profiled candidates Roisin O’Farrell, who is currently on council, and her challenger Uma Coimbature. She also recapped the candidate forum that was hosted by the Indy.
After the election, Ms. Lin became the business editor, leading a team of three reporters. In this role, she has continued to follow developments within the local business community, bringing us unique stories of Sammamish Farmers Market vendors and informing us of Puget Sound Energy’s increase in natural gas prices.
As editor-in-chief, Ms. Lin said she will “maintain and strengthen the Indy’s culture as a place where students are truly passionate about reporting on local events and have the opportunity to develop journalistic writing skills that aren’t typically taught in classes.”
Outside of the Indy, she enjoys soccer, a sport she has played for 12 years. She is also an oboe musician and a committed volunteer at Swedish Hospital.
Ms. Lin will take over the position of editor-in-chief from Hongning Wang, who will be graduating from Eastlake High School and attending college in the fall.
