Skyline crushes Glacier Peak in three sets, qualifying for state tournament for the third year in a row
On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Skyline Spartan girls’ volleyball team faced the Glacier Peak Grizzlies in a three-set match ending in a Spartan triumph.
While Skyline took the early lead, Glacier Peak quickly shifted the momentum to tie the score, 10-10, when Ashley Jang dropped an ace and Claire Sedenquist added a strategically placed hit. The Spartans managed to outpace the Grizzlies but only temporarily as they tied the set again, 22-22.
Glacier Peak managed to take the lead once during the set for a score of 23-22. The Spartans answered immediately, regaining the advantage in two plays. Emma Gutke sealed the deal with a spike that ended the set, 25-23, Skyline.
The second set played similarly to the first, with Skyline taking the early lead. The Spartans outscored the Grizzlies with contributions from Madeline Thompson, Megan Chen, and Gutke to win the second set 25-19.
Anxious to secure their spot in the state tournament for the third year in a row, Skyline kept the mojo going. This time, Sanika Vipin and Liz Oberg stood out as the Spartans dominated again. Another spike from Gutke ended the match with a 25-16 victory for Skyline.
The Spartans will face the Issaquah Eagles next, a team they have struggled to beat this year. When asked about the upcoming game, Piper Hawryluk said “I am excited. We played them multiple times, but I feel that we are better and are closer as a team and can beat them.”
“Going back to State was one of our team goals, and we want to be able to place in the top eight so we can get a trophy. We look forward to competing in Yakima next week,” Coach Eddie said.
The Skyline Spartans will play the Lake Stevens Vikings at noon on Saturday, Nov. 15 at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek.
