Eastlake Lady Wolves lose in tough contest against Redmond
In a competitive match-up against the Redmond Mustangs girls basketball team, the Eastlake Lady Wolves suffered a 66-61 loss at home on Friday, Jan. 17.
After a scoreless first minute, Natalie West broke the ice for Redmond, putting the first two points on the board. Helping to set the back-and-forth tone for the quarter, Brooke McCartney quickly responded with a 3-pointer for Eastlake. With contributions from Megan Roberts and Addison Baumgartner, the Lady Wolves kept it close with a one-point deficit, 15-14, to end the first quarter.
The second period found the Lady Wolves struggling to keep pace as the Mustangs caught fire to take the lead with back-to-back threes from Iha Kasam and West. With additional consecutive buckets from Sofia Locati, the Redmond lead extended to 30-21, prompting Eastlake head coach Sara Goldie to call a timeout in an attempt to break the visitors’ momentum. Unfortunately, a foul on Baumgartner sent the Mustangs to the free throw line for another two points and a slight lead at the half, 32-25.
The Lady Wolves knew they needed to keep pace with the Mustangs. Both McCartney and Maggie Bredeweg dropped 2-point buckets attempting to keep Eastlake in the fight. Unfortunately for the home team, Locati and Kasam continued to hammer away at the Lady Wolves with consistent, accurate shots, racking up an additional 20 points. Redmond broadened their lead to end the third quarter, 52-38.
With time and opportunity running out, Eastlake had to find a way to break Redmond’s momentum. The Lady Wolves fought hard in the fourth quarter with their best point gain of the night for an additional 28 points. While Eastlake held the Redmond offense to 14, the consistent play by the Mustangs throughout the game was too much to overcome in the end. Eastlake, unable to bridge the gap, fell 66-61.
Following the game, Bredeweg and Coach Goldie reflected on the hard-fought loss.
“It’s definitely a game that we could have won. We just need to keep up the momentum and play more as a team,” Bredeweg said.
“We battled and gave ourselves a chance and we were right there at the very end. It was a great ending to a great competitive girls basketball game,” Goldie said.
The Eastlake Lady Wolves will play the Woodinville Falcons on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Eastlake High School at 6:00 p.m.
